Reconstructive Surgery and Burn Center in Kabul, Afghanistan
The Afghan Reconstructive Surgery and Burn Center supported
by The Grossman Burn Foundation in partnership with Direct Relief
International opened its doors in Kabul, Afghanistan last month
and is now treating patients in desperate need of healthcare
related to burns, reconstructive needs and deformities.
Dr.
Abdul Asat, Chief Of Staff, Co-director and manager of Operations
for the newly opened Afghan Reconstructive Surgery and Burn
Center sponsored by The Grossman Burn Foundation in partnership
with Direct Relief International performed their first burn
treatment surgery early December.
Grossman Burn Foundation Chair, Rebecca Grossman, traveled to
Washington D.C. in early December for a brunch at the White
House hosted by First Lady Laura Bush honoring the Afghan Women's
Council. President George Bush joined the group for the first
half hour to show his support for the efforts being made in
Afghanistan. Additionally, a dinner for the council was held
that evening at Afghan Ambassador Said Jawad and his wife Shamin
Jawad's home. Rebecca said "Surprisingly, the opening of
our nonprofit reconstructive surgery and burn center in Kabul
was the hottest topic of discussion at both events." Further
talks are underway with the State Department and the Department
Of Defense with regard to additional ongoing support for the
new Afghan burn center.

Ann Halpin with Mary Ann Halpin Photography (maryannhalpin.com)
reflects on her experience with Rebecca Grossman the Chair
of the Grossman Burn Foundation. The following are excerpts
of her reflection:
"In
the Mother's Day issue of LA Parent Magazine, I photographed
Rebecca Grossman and her two children for the cover and
an article called "Mom's Who Move Mountains. In addition
to the cover of LA Parent, the same portrait has been featured
in all the windows of Pumpkin Patch Children's Stores in
all the LA area stores. Rebecca and her husband Dr. Peter
Grossman founded The Grossman Burn Foundation. They recently
opened a burn center in Kabul, Afghanistan early this year.
The facility will help numerous burn victims waiting treatment
in the region in addition to providing quality medical treatment
for injured military personnel awaiting transport back to
the states. For more information and donations go to: www.grossmanburnfoundation.org"
