SUCI

Suci lives in a small coastal village on Halmahera Island in Indonesia. She was married at just 16 years old, and only six months into her marriage, a tragic accident changed her life forever. While cooking, her hair caught fire, and within moments the flames spread to her clothing. The burns she sustained were catastrophic.

Suci suffered extensive, full-body burns that left her severely disfigured. Scar tissue caused her neck to fuse to her chest, and her arms became locked in an “L” position. She lived in constant pain and was unable to turn her head, close her mouth comfortably, or use her hands. Everyday tasks became impossible, and her future felt uncertain.
The Gift of In-Kind Surgeries

Through the compassion and generosity of the Grossman Burn Foundation, and Dignity Memorial Hospital, Suci was brought to the United States to receive life-changing care. Under the expert surgical leadership of Dr. Peter Grossman and the medical team at Dignity Memorial Hospital, Suci underwent a series of in-kind reconstructive surgeries, along with hyperbaric chamber therapy. These procedures gradually released the scar contractures that had imprisoned her body.

As a result of this care, Suci regained mobility, experienced profound relief from chronic pain, and was given something she had not known in years: independence. Today, she can move freely, care for herself, and look toward the future with hope as a healthy young adult.

A Home Away From Home

During her eight-month journey of healing, Suci found more than medical care. Ronald McDonald House opened its doors to her, providing not only shelter and daily necessities, but also love, stability, and a sense of family. The Ronald McDonald House team embraced Suci wholeheartedly, surrounding her with warmth and compassion far from her home country.

Suci’s story is a powerful reminder of what is possible when medical excellence, community partnership, and human kindness come together. Her journey embodies the mission of the Grossman Burn Foundation: restoring lives, dignity, and hope to burn survivors who would otherwise be left without care.
